The days are getting warmer and warmer as we approach spring. As a new season begins there is a re-awakening toward internal development and behavioural change. This leads to a desire to get yourself and your surroundings in order and ready for the season ahead. Spring is the perfect time of year to de-clutter not only your home or work space but your body and mind.
Spring cleaning is something we are all familiar with in terms of cleaning your house and yard but it is also a great time to put your focus on cleaning out and organizing your work environment. A cluttered office causes stress and distraction and you will save yourself valuable time searching through all of those piles of paper on your desk once you’ve done a little tidying up. A good place to start is clearing your desk of all papers and files. After this you can begin a more proactive routine of putting away documents immediately after they are put on your desk. You can take this a step further and look through your electronic documents and emails saved on your computer and ensure they are all filed away in the appropriate folders in order to find them as quickly and easily as possible. One Spring cleaning project we have taken upon ourselves here in the Enseco office is carefully looking through our commonly used documents and ensuring all of our information, numbers and dates are up to date. Updating your internal documents can be easily overlooked each year so set aside some time during your spring cleaning to get this done as well.
Not only will a more streamlined space help you feel more in control of your day-to-day life, it could also make you fitter. Researchers have found that the owners of tidy homes are more likely to be physically fit than those who live in messy environments. Plus, a little elbow grease can torch serious calories. According to Everyday Health’s My Calorie Counter, a 150-pound person can burn 133 calories in 30 minutes of vigorous cleaning. Why not further that calorie loss and get outside for a run? Enjoy the warm days while they are here. Studies have shown that exercising outside is better for your mental and physical wellbeing. So get active this season! The most important part of achieving a healthy body is what you fuel it. During the warmer months your body will naturally crave less heavy food so take advantage of this. Fruits, vegetables and lean meat are a perfect spring diet. Peas, asparagus, kale, radicchio, and rhubarb are just a few of the fresh foods that reach their peak during spring. So stay close to home this spring and experiment with some well-rounded homemade meals.
Arguably, the most important reason to unclutter your space is so you can unclutter your mind. When your environment is cluttered, the chaos restricts your ability to focus. The clutter also limits your brain’s ability to process information. A messy house or office can distract you and keep you from processing information as well as you do in an uncluttered, organized, and serene environment. Another way our minds get cluttered is with overwhelming ideas, things to do, and inane questions. Keeping track of all the stuff in our lives can be exhausting so how can we release the mind chatter and focus on the present? Stop worrying about things you cannot control; replace your negative thoughts with positive and your worries of what could go wrong with hopes of what could go right. Write everything down; making lists for your plans, goals and events will create a feeling of organization and simplicity. Meditation works wonders for bringing peace; do this by clearing your mind, focusing on your breath, how your body feels and by connecting to the energy around you. Most importantly do what makes you happy; express yourself in whatever creative manner helps you live in the now and simply feel good.

Spring Salad – Submitted by Karissa Hansen
The sun is starting to shine, the warm weather just around the corner and taste buds are feeling the seasons change. When I went to my cutting board the other day what I came up with reflected that in a light and refreshing spring salad.
All you need to do to recreate this healthy meal is combine the following ingredients:
- Mixed salad greens
- Strips of chicken seasoned with lemon and garlic
- Boiled egg(s) thinly sliced into quarters
- Candied Pecans
- Goat Cheese, cubed
- Cherry tomatoes cut in halves
- Strawberries cut in halves
- Cooked Cous Cous
Top it off with a Creamy Poppyseed Dressing and enjoy!
